LAB MANUAL

Aim: (a) To plot the zener diode characteristics and find the zener voltage

(b) To plot its transfer characteristics for a given load

Requirement: DC Power Supply (0-32V)                 1
Zener diode                                         1
Resistors          1K (1/4 watt)              1
10K (1/4 watt)            1
Breadboard                                         1
DMM                                                  1
Ammeter (0-100mA)                          1
Connecting wires
Activity 1: Zener diode characteristics:
Circuit Diagram:

(i) Forward Characterstics
Procedure:
1. Connect the circuit as shown in the Fig.2.1
2. Vary the input voltage Vs in small steps from 0 to 10V.
3. Note down the readings Vz and Iz.
4. Note down the cut-in voltage at which the diode starts conducting.
5. Plot the graph (Vz Iz)

Procedure:
1. Connect the circuit as shown in the Fig.2.2
2. Vary the input voltage Vs in steps of 1V from 0 to 20V.
3. Note down the readings Vi and Vo.
4. Plot the graph (Vi Vo)
Observation:

No. of Observation    Vs in Volts               Vz in Volts               Iz in mA

(ii) Reverse Characteristics: A graph between (Vz Iz) when the zener diode is reverse
biased
Procedure:
1. Interchange the polarity of the dc supply of the circuit shown in Fig.2.1.by connecting
-ve polarity to p-side and +ve polarity to n-side of the zener diode.
2. Vary the input voltage Vs in steps from 0 to 20V.
                                3. Note down the readings Vz and Iz.
4. Plot the graph (Vz Iz)
5. Note down the zener breakdown voltage
Observation:

No. of Observation    Vs in Volts               Vz in Volts               Iz in mA

Activity 2: Transfer Characteristics
Circuit Diagram:

Procedure:

1. Connect the circuit as shown in the Fig.2.2
2. Vary the input voltage Vs in steps of 1V from 0 to 20V.
3. Note down the readings Vi and Vo.
4. Plot the graph (Vi Vo)
Observation:

No. of Observation    Vi in Volts                Vo in Volts
